France Urges Citizens to Exit Mali

(MENAFN) The French Foreign Ministry on Wednesday advised its citizens in Mali to evacuate the country on a temporary basis, recommending departure “as soon as possible.”

“Following the attacks … in several locations across the country, including Bamako, the security situation remains extremely volatile,” the ministry said in a statement, encouraging French nationals to take advantage of remaining commercial flights to leave the country.

Paris also called on its citizens who are still in Mali to stay inside their homes and keep regular communication with family members. It further stated that “If they must travel, they are urged to exercise the utmost caution,” while stressing that all instructions issued by local authorities should be strictly observed.

These advisories come in the aftermath of a wave of coordinated assaults carried out by armed factions, including the al-Qaeda-linked militant organization JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front, a rebel coalition led by Tuareg groups. The attacks took place on Saturday across several cities, including the capital, Bamako.

In an official announcement broadcast on Sunday by Gen. Issa Ousmane Coulibaly on national television, the transitional authorities of the country confirmed that Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed during the incidents.

According to the statement, a suicide attacker driving a car detonated a vehicle-borne explosive device aimed at the minister’s residence in Kati, a strategic military town located near Bamako.
